Sheng Hsiang and Band (Hakka music from Taiwan) - Seattle

Multiple award-winning musician Lin Sheng-Hsiang has played major folk festivals and leading venues around the world. Growing up in Meinong in southern Taiwan he was influenced by traditional Hakka mountain songs he heard from his grandmother. As a student, he listened to Western folk and rock.

With songwriting deeply rooted in traditional village culture and keen observations on human relations across generations, Lin Sheng-Hsiang sings about real life in every rural community. He has released 9 albums. His distinctive voice and the skillful use of a traditional instrument, six-string yueqin (moon guitar), has won him 7 Golden Melody awards amongst which he refused to accept two for protesting the Golden Melodies' categorisation of music by race and language. He has also won 7 Golden Indie Music Awards.

Sheng-Hsiang and Band is passionate about agriculture and the environment and their music is greatly influenced by traditional Taiwanese folk songs. However, their work also incorporates many sounds of Western music and other influences so that their performances are one of a kind.

Sheng-Hsiang & Band’s powerful album, I-Village, came up big at the 2013 Golden Melody Awards, winning Album of the Year, Grand Jury Prize and Musician of the Year. The album not only catches the essence of Hakka culture, but also features folk songs from southern Taiwan and Okinawa, Japan. As Lin Sheng-Hsiang explains: “I-Village is my hometown. It is the call of every post-modern village, calling for traditional rustic simplicity, calling for simple truths, and especially calling for the freedom of the land.” This sums up in general his attitude towards music and life.

Lin Sheng Hsiang (Vocal, Acoustic Guitar, Moon Guitar), Ken Ohtake (Acoustic Guitar), Toru Hayakawa (Bass), Zhong Yongfeng (Lyricist), Zao Chuante (Electric Bass), Wu Zhengjun (Percussion).
